Workshop: Explorations in 3-D Watercolor Nuno Felt

Instructor:  Judith Dios

Date:  ThursdaySaturday, January 12 – 14, 2017 (3 days)

Location:  Spirited Hands Studio

Time: 9 am to 4 pm

Cost: $201* for THSG members; $292 for nonmembers

*Supported by a generous grant from the Harriet Rein Memorial Fund

Materials Fee: Will range from $5 – $85; a chart showing materials cost & amount of time required to complete each project will be provided to students in advance.  Students may bring their own materials or purchase them on the premises.  Individual arrangements will be made with each student in advance.

Level: No experience is necessary unless a student wishes to make a garment.  If so, NUNO felting experience is required.  Judith will guide participants in selecting projects that correspond to their skill level.

Maximum # of students: 10

Instructor Information: Judith works and teaches from her studio on the idyllic island of Salt Spring, British Columbia.  Her passion for exploration of the natural world and innovation led her to create ethereal nuno felted pieces with textural and dramatic surface effects.  She uses natural fibers, fabrics and her own hand-spun silk yarn to create her pieces.  Each piece is hand-painted as if it were a watercolor, further enhancing the inherent beauty of nuno felt.  Judith travels regularly to teach throughout Canada and the U.S.  She sells her work internationally in galleries and boutiques.

Workshop Description: Participants will receive instruction in basic nuno felting and 3-D fabric and fiber techniques, the uses of resists, the “No Roll” method of felting, hand-painting and heat-setting of dyes, fulling and finishing techniques.  In the 3-day class, they will have ample time for guided exploration on their own and will use these techniques to complete a nuno-felted scarf with 3-D surface effects to take home.  Advanced students who are experienced with nuno felting can make a larger garment.  At the end of the workshop, beginners will be equipped with techniques that, with practice, will take them to an intermediate level.  Felters of all skill levels will enhance their skills with decorative surface elements and achieve a watercolor effect through dye hand painting.  In addition they will be able to complete projects in less time and with less physical labor using the “No Roll” method of felting.  The importance of proper fulling will be discussed.  In general, participating in this workshop will help students create felt of good quality that is durable and long lasting.

Materials and Supplies: Supply lists will be provided well in advance of the workshop.
