Workshop:  Textile and Fiber Art: From Photographing to Image-editing Your Design Work

Instructor Information: Gregory Case and Elena Morera are full-time commercial photographers specializing in textile, quilt and fiber art photography.  Their work has been displayed in over 134 different booklets, books, e-books, magazines, and museum catalogues.  Over 500 of their images have been displayed in various media including web sites, patterns, and juried shows.  They are regular contributors to five different textile/quilt/fiber art magazines, including over four years writing a digital photography column for Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot Magazine.  They have provided marketing print and blog images for “Road to California Quilter’s Conference and Showcase” for over seven years, and have been the “behind the scenes” photographers for “The Quilt Show” for over eight years.  The have taught textile, quilt and fiber art photography, Photoshop Elements, and travel/inspirational photography at over eighteen different international conferences including 3 HGA Conferences.

Workshop Description:  “If you’re frustrated with not getting the color right in your textiles/fiber art, or your details and texture don’t show well, if your lighting is inconsistent, and/or you’re confused with juried-show/print image requirements, this class is for you. You will learn (way) over 18 tips to improve your own textile and fiber art photography for your own documentation, social media/blog/web site use, and for juried shows and print publications. We will cover the basics of your digital Point & Shoot or SLR camera, how to set up your “home studio,” achieve more accurate color, and learn different lighting techniques.

And once you have photographed your textile/fiber art, now what do you do? Image editing is often necessary to complete the digital photography process but many people stop improving/enhancing their images once they put their camera away. Many people find preparing their images (if they do at all) for use in juried shows, print, and social media frustrating and confusing. In this introductory image-editing class, you will learn how to color-correct, brighten/darken your image, crop/straighten, put in different backgrounds, resize your image for various uses and other image-editing techniques.”

Materials and Supplies:

  1. A digital camera that you are familiar with.
  2. A computer that you are familiar with – that is you must have a working knowledge of your computer’s operating system before the workshop begins.  The class is not an introduction to computers.
  3.   4. Gregory will send out a questionnaire before the workshop to assess the groups’ familiarity with their cameras and software.  At that time, he will tell us which of the software programs we will be using.
