Instructor Information: Bobbie Irwin has been weaving for 40 years. She’s been teaching for conferences, guilds, and shops since 1985, including numerous Midwest and Convergence conferences. She has contributed to Interweave Press publications for many years as a columnist, editorial assistant, and contributing editor, and is the author of three textile books. When not traveling, she enjoys playing “what if?” games on her looms in her Montrose, Colorado studio.

Workshop Description: Fabrics that appear to change color as the light and angle of view change seem almost magical!  Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t have to use fine silk, plain weave, and complementary hues to weave iridescent fabrics. Learn to predict which colors will produce iridescence while you experiment with a variety of weave structures. Some of the amazing possibilities are 3-, 4-, and 5-color iridescence, iridescence with black and white, and iridescence with analogous colors.

Participants weave a plain-weave color gamp using three to six analogous warp colors (participant’s choice of width) and 24 weft colors. Then we analyze the sampler for iridescence and choose two effective weft colors to weave a second sampler on the same warp. The second sampler explores other weave structures and color variations, including 3-color iridescence. A large selection of fabric samples, both handwoven and factory-made, will be available for your inspiration.

Materials and Supplies: Lists will be sent in plenty of time to prepare for the class.
